Information on Esophageal Cancer?

my dad was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the summer. I think I was in denial until now because the chemo seemed to be going so well but now he has stopped responding to the first type of chemo. He is only 50.
I had a couple questions and was also wondering if anyone could refer me to a good site so I could learn more about this.

With cancer, how come if they get rid of it, and are in remission, it can come back? I don't understand this.

I am so scared of losing my dad and him not being able to see his grandchildren. I read that it's only a 25% survival rate within 5 years for this disease.

omg thats horrible
that was just a slap in the face for me bc my dad is also 50 and he has barretts esophogas which can lead to esophageal cancer....thats so sad...
i found this site
http://www.cancercenter.com/esophageal-c...
i hope he comes to a full recovery

The reason cancers come back or relapse is because we think even early on, cancer cells can spread from the site of origin. Since they are microscopic cells floating elsewhere, it is impossible to detect. Surgery and radiation can take care of the main disease area that we can see, and chemotherapy hopefully will help kill off cells that have moved elsewhere. But the response to chemo is not great in many cancers, ergo cancers recur.

Sorry to hear you and your father have to deal with this stuff. I would check out a relatively new site, its well written and should have something that will help you cope, or deal with the situation. the website is http://www.positivecancer.com
