Anybody else with GERDS and Chest Pains?

I have GERDS sometimes the Nexium works sometimes it doesn't no matter what I eat, have been on Proton Pump Inhibitors 2 yrs and now can't get off them, have talked with others who have the same problem, about one day is all I can go without taking the medicine and the chest pains and burping, heartburn reoccur ( have the chest pains several times a week regardless, the Dr says it's esophageal spasms) . Proton Pump Inhibitors are ment for short term use any one else have this problem? Are we headed for increased risk for gastric cancer?

I have had GERD since 1986. I too have tried all the meds out there and the Proton Pump Inhibitors(PPIs) work the best for me. I take mostly Prevacid, it works the best, but I do take Protonix at times. I still have to supplement with some Maalox at least once per day. You really don't want to go without them as that lets that acid go into the esophagus and cause damage. We run the risk of developing Barrett's Esophagus which can be precancerous. So esophageal cancer is our big risk. We need to keep the esophagus safe and protected. There is surgery for GERD such as Nissan Fundalplication and occ they will go in a actually cut the vagal nerve that controls the acid production. I myself am in no hurry for either of those surgeries. I get esophageal spasms frequently. The first time I got them I thought I was having a heart attack and went to ER. Although they say that PPI use is for short term, it is usually long term in the end. I think that by saying for short term, we can get people into the office and monitor them closer. No medication is without some risk, but in the case of GERD and PPI use, the benefit definately outweighs the risk. If you aren't getting much relief from diet changes and your Nexium, go back to your doc. Nexium did nothing for me. My drug is Prevacid. It is quite common for one certain PPI to work better than another for certain people. Ask your doc to let you try a different one and keep trying them until you find the one that works. Take care!
