Is there a link between the Epstein-Barr virus and chronic leukemia and/or any type of leukemia? |
I was infected with the Epstein-Barr virus about 2 years ago. It triggered CFIDS/Fibromyalgia. I just found out recently a friend was just diagnosed with Chronic Leukemia. He also had the Epstein-Barr virus. I have seen some articles on the internet connecting the two, but can't find any in depth articles, only vague references. Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? Yes, there is a link between Epstein barr virus (EBV) and chronic leukemia/lymphoma like: chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). Unfortunately these journals require subscriptions. I don't know, but 90% of people over age 35 have been infected with the Epstein-Barr virus. That would equal a lot of leukemia. There's likely more factors than just the virus that causes leukemia, if the virus is related at all. There is a clear link between several types of lymphoma and also nasal carcinoma related to EBV status but the link between leukemia and EBV is much tenuous. Since EBV is so common among adults it is hard to establish a direct cause-effect relationship other than for the types of cancer where there are high levels of the EBV found in the tumors of the particular cancers already known to be linked to the EBV. Here is a web page that might be helpful. Scroll down to the section on EBV Induced Lymphoproliferative Diseases. Andee is correct most people in the United States over 35 have been infected with Epstein-Barr, but not many have leukemia, so it would not make sense that there is a connection. I am not aware of Epstein-Barr causing any cancer, however it may be associated with Burkitt's lymphoma and nasopharyngeal carcinomas. Try searching the CDC website. |
