Epilepsy?????

I get angry all the time at little things and I have always had this strong feelings of anger inside me(I even remember feeling like this aged 2).
I have epilepsy...could this be the reason?

I'm 16 now and getting more angry all the time.

I'm 24/male and I've had Epilepsy all my life, been through brain surgery (right temporal lobectomy), and just about every medication the earth has to offer.

Certain types of Epilepsy do make patients prone to depression or mental illness. After I had my surgery at age 12, I went through a very severe 3-year depression during which I was pretty angry and isolated, even attempting suicide.

However, I don't know if your anger is directly or indirectly related to your epilepsy - it may or may not be. It's kind of hard to believe that you remember being angry at age 2, if only because almost all two years olds are pretty temperamental.

I do know that many epilepsy medications such as Depakote and Tegretol also serve as antidepressants.

If I were you, I would talk to your neurologist as soon as humanly possible and tell him about this. He/she will probably refer you to a therapist or even a neuropsychologist.

Until then, I would recommend getting some form of exercise as soon as possible. When I start feeling angry or depressed, I usually go for a really long walk or a good jog everyday for a few weeks and it helps. For one, it channels some of that angry energy out of the body, but exercise is has also been proven to increase the seratonin (the chemical that is released and causes feeling of peace/happiness) levels in the brain.

But I would be careful to not assume everything that goes wrong with your life or your emotions is a result of your epilepsy. I went through that from about ages 13-16 and it was the worst period of my life for me and my family. It is a trap, really, and a nasty one at that.

I still have Epilepsy and experience about 5-10 seizures a year, but there is hope for people like us to live normal lives and be happy. Just try to channel some of that anger into something productive or artistic - get a guitar, go for a jog, write a journal or a letter, but just try to find someway to release your anger in a way that doesn't hurt those around you.

Well, epilepsy does have a direct effect on your brain chemicals and hormones, so, yes, it is possible.

I don't think you anger and epilepsy have anything to do with each other. Although some medication can have diverse affects on the brain and how you communicate, the anger management situation is probably a completely separate aspect of your personality.
I have people in my family with epilepsy who take medication that makes them react a little more slowly than usual, but that's it.
You should consider some form of therapy for your anger before it gets out of control.
I wish you the best of luck!

Talk to your neurologist. There could be an inter-relationship but there most likely is something else going on, too.

are you on medication for your epilepsy? maybe your anger issue is a reaction to the medicine and not actually to the condition...

Maybe. You really should talk to your neurologist maybe it's one of the side effects of the meds you're taking. Make sure you ask him exactly what effects does epilepsy have on your moods or how do your moods affect your epilepsy.
I've had epilepsy for 15yrs and i've noticed that when I get really worried or sad i'm more prone to have a seizure. So talk to your doctor. Good Luck!!
