Is epilepsy a disease that can be transmitted?

My grand father had epilepsy and the child of my girlfriend's brother got epilepsy also.
Should i worry that my kids will have epilepsy too?

depending on the reason. If the person has epilepsy becasue of an brain injury at birth or after no. but there are other reasons for seizures.

you can be genetically tested you and your girlfriend to see if you are carrying some ressesive gene that could cause a problem

Inborn errors of metabolism are rare, genetically transmitted enzyme deficiencies that block or interfere with cellular metabolic pathways. In British Columbia, from 1969 to 1996, the incidence was approximately 40 cases per 100,000 live births, including diseases of amino acids, organic acids, the urea cycle, galactosemia, primary lactic acidoses, glycogen storage, and lysosomal storage and diseases specifically involving peroxisomal and mitochondrial respiratory chain dysfunction.69

Symptoms and signs occur when pathway intermediates proximal to the enzymatic block accumulate to toxic levels, or they result from deficient products of the affected metabolic pathways. Most inborn errors of metabolism present with progressive neurologic and systemic symptoms. Seizures often begin in the neonatal period or during infancy. See Table: Metabolic Disorders of Infantile Seizures for a list of metabolic disorders associated with infantile seizures.

Its not 'contageous' but generally epilepsy is carried in the genes. My grandmother had it and now my cousin does. Best to get them checked out.

Some forms of Epilepsy can be passed along in families. Some forms are caused by injury or illness. Before you have a family, you can be tested to see if you're a carrier.

NO.

epilepsy is not a disease
but it could be heredity

Dunno where sarah e got her info, it's whack

All depends. My dad had epilepsy, I had but mine was more severe than him. Again depends the type of seizure ect. Advices consult with you family doctor.

Well, there are some people with epilepsy who get it from their families, but then there are also some who can get things like epilepsy or even autism from a thing like an MMR Shot ( don't know what it stands for haha). But then, I read in a book that epilepsy isn't inherited, but it could be from genetics.

epilepsy is primarily caused by HPV (human papilloma virus). it is most commonly spread via sexual contact. therefore, your grandfather probably transmitted it to your girlfriend's brother's children, and, more than likely, to your own children.
