Epilepsy & college? |
I'm heading off to college in a week....I'll be playing a D1 sport there...I have epilepsy (juvenile myoclonic) and its not like i have many issues with it if i take my meds... i dont get grand mals (only had 1 which led to diagnosis), just occasional jerks...b/c of my meds i can't drink alcohol at all, what am i supposed to tell my friends when they ask me to drink? and since a lot of the nightlife in college is centered around drinking what the heck am i supposed to do?? i dont want to say "i dont drink" and have them trying to convince me to b/c ive been in that situation before and its just annoying..and i dont want to be bored just bc i cant drink...epilepsy still has a stigma & im scared to let people know i have it, even though i have accepted it.......also, should i tell my roommate i have it? my teachers/coaches?? ugh I dealt with seizures for 13 years. I was never afraid to tell anyone around me that I had seizures. If your friends ask you to drink I would be straight forward with them by telling them you can't drink b/c of your seizures. If they are true friends they will understand. You really don't need to drink to have fun. There is no reason to be scared to tell people. Those people you are around the most need to know you have them, someday you might need their help if you have a seizure and they need to know what to expect and what they can do for you. For your safety they need to know. Good luck with your college! |
