Endoscopy, do i have a choice? help, I'm scared!? |
A couple of days ago, my stool was black for three days, when i went to the doctor he perscribed me Prilosec and the stool had changed into normal state. However i still have pains every day in my stomach, the pain is slowly reducing, i have almost every symptom of an ulcer, and i was told to make an appointment for endoscopy. I have had many endoscopy procedures. They are performed by gastroenterologists who are specialists. The procedure is not so bad, it sounds worse than it is (really). It is a definitive test and will help the doctor adequately diagnose what is wrong with you. You could also go to a bigger hospital in a city near you. Check with your insurance to see if they will cover a specialist at a larger hospital. Don't have the test done at your local hospital if you don't trust them. After all, it's your body. If they really think you have an ulcer, why not start treating it with medicine and see if that doesn't solve the problem? If they suspect something else then go for the endoscopy. The dark stools were a sign of bleeding from the upper digestive tract. Yes,they could start you on medicine for ulcers but what if it were a cancer? You can't know that without the endoscopy. The procedure id usually very simple and painless since they give you a sedative prior to the procedure. If they find a polyp, they can usually remove it then and there without further surgery (this is a frequent cause of upper GI bleeding) Surely your doctor is trained in this procedure since all hospitals have to be accredited by JACHO in order to stay open. The first one I had was done in the doctors office! They very seldom do that anymore. |
