Anyone know about encephalitis?

My dad had encephalitis over 4 months ago. His symptoms ie. forgetfulness, depression, psychosis are getting worse instead of better. Has anyone had experience with this illness?

We know what's caused my Dad's encephalitis...cold sores... and he's been under the treatment of an MD as well as a neurologist. But, noone seems to be able to contribute any hope as to why his condition is worsening after 4 months. Any first hand experience with this disease would be greatly appreciated. We know the cause and effect.... have studied it ad nauseum.

I had HSE back in 1999, and would like to welcome you to join the Encephalitis Global website, where you can share information and support with others.
In reference to your words... hang in! Recovery from encephalitis is not measured in months... basic recovery is often measured at the 2 year point (although improvements can continue after that time.)

Encephalitis is inflammation of the parenchyma (the parts of an organ which, in contradistinction to its interstitial tissue, are concerned with its function) of the brain, resulting from direct viral invasion or hypersensitivity initiated by a virus or another foreign protein. Encephalomyelitis is the same process but involves the brain and spinal cord. These disorders can be caused by many viruses. Symptoms include fever, headache, and altered mental status, often accompanied by seizures or focal neurologic deficits. Diagnosis requires CSF analysis and neuroimaging. Treatment is supportive and, for certain causes, includes antiviral drugs.

Encephalitis is inflammation of brain cells usually caused by a viral infection. It sometimes is caused by the bacteria from Lyme disease or parasites such as the testse fly.
The severity varies widely.
In mild cases there may be fever, headache, and loss of energy or appetite.
In more severe cases it can cause irritability, restlessness, and drowsiness.
In extreme cases there can be loss of muscular movement, double vision, and trouble keeping balance and hearing. Coma can result.
The risk vary with age and the kind of infectious agent that cause the encephalitis.
Some types of encephalitis can be treated with drugs. If antibiotics are not working they usually allow the body's natural defenses to overcome the infection.
