Why should Employers consider mental health issues in the Work Place?

In any one year about 3 in every 10 employees will have a mental health problem, and depression is one of the most common, do employers care enough about their staff?

All employers have a "health and safety" rule as regards to the well being of their employees - and that should cover ALL aspects of employees "health and safety"; whether that be mental health or physical safety.

That being said... employers have always to be vigilant against those who wish to 'milk the system' - like a footballer diving in the penalty area, there are always going to be people who try to play the offside rule to their own advantage.

Well The government are lobbying this and are trying to bring mental illness into the disability act.

A strange fact is that most mentally unstable people are like us, black, why is that?

because even a panic attack can severely affect a persons ability
hopefully things will change in the workplace but i wouldnt bet on it

Employers often times donot care enough about their employees mental health, and they should because often times, depression and anxiety are hightened by work situations.

I think most employers now a day do care about mental health issues. And yes the most ones are depression and anxiety. A lot of employers have implemented the EAP (employee assistance program), especially if they have a union. In that case, the union will refer the employee to a therapists, and sometimes even pay for maybe three visits. I guess it just depends on what company you work for.

You are a disposable asset you may think your important to the company but no one is irreplaceable and the outlook of many employers now is
Buy in, burn out, replace,
there is always someone to take your place and usually it's a work "college" and for a few less quid

It is time the company was held to task for creating the stress and rather than pay compensation ( a word we see too much of lately ) sort out the workload and the support to enable people to concentrate on the quality of their work rather than the quantity and speed
Sadly today collective bargaining is all but illegal thanks to Mrs T so you can either burn up or bugger off
work doesn't have to be a four letter word if it is then you are in the wrong job work takes a large chunk of our lives make sure you enjoy it not suffer it

Employers -like many in society- are not comfortable with dealing with mental health problems. I have been a teacher for 10 years and have suffered with severe depression bouts. The response I have received from the workplace has been at best - frosty. I am very open about my illness as I believe that keeping quiet just adds to the stigma and ignorance.

Recently I have been off for 4 months - at all stages I was honest with the school- however the school decided I was not STABLE enough to work with children anymore - the outrage I felt!! Of course ths was discrimination and I took it further. I now have received a full apology and have left that post. The most amazing thing about this incident is that it is a common occurrence. Even apparently educated people are ignorant.

I am currently going round schools in my area doing a mental health awareness workshop with students and teachers. Each time I am amazed at the sheer lack of understanding.
