How long can you live with emphysema?

My dad was diagnosed with Emphysema almost 1.5 years ago. He smoked for almost 50 years. As soon as he was diagnosed with the disease, he stopped smoking and has never smoked since. I love my dad very much and I am very proud of him for stopping smoking, however, I just feel like it is too little too late. How long can someone live with Emphysema if they follow doctor's orders to a T?

That's a very difficult question to answer without knowing the specifics of your dad's case. It really depends on how severe the damage to his lungs is. I've seen patients live for several decades, and others only a few years...

If the damage isn't too severe, and he doesn't smoke, takes good care of himself, gets good medical attention, he could do fine for many years.

Here's some more info on emphysema...

There is no time limit because if that was true god didn't give it to my mom. She passed 2 yrs ago and by the time she was diagnosed she already had it for probably 10yrs. She smoked too and had stopped for over 15yrs but she still got sick and it just got worse, we had a ventilator at the house , oxygen tanks & she had the tubes up her nose. 3 years went by and one morning I went in to check on her and she was gone. I can't even write this without tearing up. The doctors were surprised but the pressure of the emphysema on her heart was too strong. Cherish every moment you have with your dad because you just never know. I don't say this to scare you , maybe your dad is lucky but unfortunetly this disease doesn't go away and my mom followed all her doctors orders. Time means nothing, cherish it! Take Care!
