Emphysema and C.O.P.D?

My husband is 32 yrs old and was diagnosed June of 2006 with Emphysema and C.O.P.D. His doctor told him he has Moderate Emphysema. He has not quit smoking. He says that he can not quit smoking. He is trying to get disability. Lawyers have turned him down because of his age. Can he get disability? He has been trying for 1 year. He has been turned down twice by SS dept. What should I expect? Will he die in a few years? His mother is a nurse and told him he will die in 3 yrs yet she is not visiting with him. I would think that if her son was dying then she would want to spend more time with him. Sometimes I feel that he can go to work because he can do things around the house. I put one question up somewhat about this and everyone is making me feel like I am horrible for not understanding his illness. So please can someone give me some honest advise about these diseases. I want to understand. His doctor has not told him that he can not work but his doctor does know that he has not worked.

Well, if he has moderate COPD, he can join with millions of other smokers with that condition. Why should he be on disability?? He should be able to work and be a productive member of society. If he thinks that being on disablity will improve his lung function, he is wrong. Sitting around all day, with nothing to do, no friends around will make stop smoking really hard. I quit smoking in 1973, and if I had been smoking all these years, would also have COPD. Good news is that by stopping, he will regain some of his lung function. Encourage that!! A new medication called Chantix might be a good help for him.
