What are electrolytes? |
they're in some sports drinks, like gatorade, but i don't know what they are or what they do for ur body. An electrolyte is a liquid substance which acts as a medium to conduct electricity. One speaks of an electrolyte in a number of different contexts, the most common including health and fitness, and various electronics and automotive disciplines. An electrolyte is full of ions, which are atoms that have some sort of net electric charge, either positive or negative. A dilute electrolyte has a relatively small amount of ions for its volume, while a concentrated electrolyte has a high amount of ions. An electrolyte is a substance that dissociates into free ions when dissolved (or molten), to produce an electrically conductive medium. Because they generally consist of ions in solution, electrolytes are also known as ionic solutions. They are sometimes referred to in abbreviated jargon as lytes. not sure, i think they are the ones that allow elecricity flow thru water. they actually are the conductors between your axons and dendrites in your nerve system... kinda like wires for your sparkplugs... it's something to do with the electricity and the water! i dont remember! In the body the electrolytes ar Sodim (Na), Potasium (K), Chloride (Cl) and Carbon dioxide (CO2). They are ions (electrically charged particles that are actually atome that have iether more or less electrons than protons) that make plasma an electrical current carrying medium, facilitating the electro-chemical functions that keep our bodies alive and working. About the only benefit fro electrolytes in sports drinks is that they entice people do drink them, it is the rehydration that is important the electrolytes in these drinks are generally passed right on through and out. |
