Replenishing electrolytes?

Do you know how much would be needed for an adult who has a stomach virus?
(like how much Pedialyte, Gadorade type drinks or how many mg., etc)?

Hello:

Hi hun,it really depends on how the person is doing in terms of can they keep ANYTHING DOWN? Is the person still throwing up non stop or can they tolerate little sips of water or gatorade? Typically, you would give an adult a sip of gatorade or powerade every thirty minutes if they can tolerate it. If they can, then you go onto a 1/2 cup of gatorade or powerade and keep going up with the amount of liquids as they start to feel better.

However, with that being said, even if an adult thinks that they are starting to feel better they will feel VERY HUNGRY and they will want to eat everything in sight which is a bad idea, because their bodies still aren't healed from being sick! My rule when it comes to stomach viruses in adults is that I start people out on on water,or gatorade or powerade to see how they tolerate it,and then I add things like chicken broth, crackers, jello, popsicles, chicken noodle soup, and go from there depending on if the person can keep the liquids down.I would stay away from any dairy products as this can really upset a person's stomach especially when they are suffering from a stomach virus!

It takes BABY STEPS to get well from a stomach virus and of course the person will have very bad headaches because they have been throwing up non stop as well as having diarrhea too. I say, that if a person CANNOT keep down ANYTHING WHATSOEVER,then get them to the local emergency room, because they will probably have to be hospitalized in order to be given ALOT of IV's in order to help them get over their stomach virus and to get better.

My daughter and I almost died from a stomach virus last year,so that is why I would take these symptoms VERY SERIOUSLY and get medical attention if the person is not able to keep ANYTHING DOWN! It is better to be safe than sorry and if you get a doctor who treats this like it is nothing serious it is trust me! I would DEMAND that the sick adult get the medical help that they deserve in order to get better! (((HUGS)))) Winnie ;-)

It probably depends on height weight and how long have you been throwing up?Are you keeping anything down at all?I would drink some gatorade it usually takes at least two to make you feel as though you are getting rehydrated.

I recommend you drink purified water mixed with Mineral Water 50/50. This will replace the minerals that are exiting your body continuously Restoring the electrolytes. You must drink beyond your thirst to get the benefits of hydration and the real key is the Mineral Water.

I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. I would recommend at least 20oz. Pedialyte or Gatorade. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body.
