Grandmother possibly has borderline personality disorder.....HELP!?

My 59 yr old grandmother lives with me. She has been informally diagnosed with borderline personality disorder by my aunt who has a mental health background.......recently i have been having some problems with her and I need some advice....

She is very difficult. asking her to do something is like trying to pull teeth. She claims she cannot do anything, (like physically..walk the dog......or carry in groceries) but she was is able to trek around the mall with me for 4 hours.

She adds a new sickness every day....diabetes, tennis elbow, herniated disc, water on the knee, blurry vision, daily chest pains and anxiety, .......i dont know what to believe anymore! Now its to the point where she wont even drive to the store anymore (100yards away) but wont sell her car.........she is very argumentative and thinks of a new excuse all the time....i just cant handle it anymore , her depression is out of control...but wont go to the doctor....are you seeing the pattern?

I need some advice

My great grandmother was like this. She was constantly making up health problems and creating drama to get attention. Once she got a list of foods to avoid on a heart healthy diet, and filled her refridgerator with every one, trying to make herself unhealthy. Another time, she stabbed herself with a 2 pronged stick and told us a snake bit her. And she was always acting like she was going to faint

The only thing you can do with a person like this is realize when and how they're trying to manipulate you. You can always get on the good side of a person like this by simply giving them attention when nobody else does and occasionally pretending like their concerns are legitimate.

Sounds like a depressed hypochondriac to me. Try and get her to see a therapist.

Even if she is your grandmother, she is manipulating you to the hilt and will use you as long as you let her. Now we know what is wrong with her, what is wrong with you that you allow this? Family members have a way of straightening up when faced with the possibility of being out of the family. Or better still out of the door.

Sounds more like she's a hypochondriac and self-centered. Sadly there's nothing you can do about that unless she's motivated to change.

you need to take her to a doctor, you shouldnt be just going by what your aunt says, even if she is a doctor, she needs to go to someone who can run tests on her and see what is exactly wrong with her..

Only a doctor can diagnose borderline. Get her to the doctor.
