Anyone know about edema on the scapula? |
My daughter had an MRI a few weeks ago because the doctor said she had a nodule on her scapula. The doctor called to tell me that the results showed some edema but her blood work and regular x-ray were fine. She said it was not sitting well with her about the edema because the nodule is really hard. They seem to think that maybe a bone was out of place but the MRI did not show that. I guess what I'm asking for is any input someone may have, I'm a bit worried about all this now. Would appreciate any answers! I've been a physical therapist for a couple of years now and have worked with a lot of patients with upper back pain including scapular problems but i haven't heard of swelling in scapula. Did the doctor tell you what the next step is after telling you the results of the MRI? How big is the nodule and where is it exactly located? Maybe it is just a knot that is huge because it hasn't been treated properly. It usually feels like a ball of really tensed muscle. Tender to touch. Usually it presents with swelling because of the inflammation around the tensed muscles. It's very commonly found on muscles around the scapula especially midscapular area(muscles in between the two scapulas on both sides of the spine. I have never heard of edema on a bone. Did you ask the doctor exactly what was swollen and what could have caused it? I am an RN and I've worked on an orthopaedic floor (bone problems) and I too have never heard this before. When my youngest son hit his head on a table, swelling developed and the swelling didn't go down fast enough and bone grew over it. And his head is fine but slightly irregular in the back side view. It's hard now and is part of his head. But a nodule needs to be biopsied and removed if that is actually what he sees. Is this doctor a specialist with bones conditions? Get a second opionion or ask the doctor to consult a specialist if he or she isn't one. Usually the radiologist reads these MRIs. If she had no injuries in that area or would want a second person looking at the MRI. Have you Googled for any scapula injuries and typed in nodule? Rx Um, bones don't develop edema. Can't Dx from here. I'm not Trent Lott. I don't Dx anyway, I just treat symptoms till I get 'em to the ER. My favorite guess so far is the one the PT presented about the muscle spasm at the scapula. Sometimes they can feel like stones. If that is the case, a few trips to the massage therapist will fix it. Hope all is well. |
