Is pitting Edema a well known symtom of Diabetes?

I have a dr. Apt today I have pitting edema and everyone thinks it is Diabetes and I was wondering if it is a common sign in Diabetes? And how they will check for Diabetes?

I guess I should list everything
1.pitting edema for months

2. Can't get enough to drink

3.Going potty all the time i counted 30 times in 1 day

4. Tired all the time

I am abot 5ft 6in and I am overwieght I weigh abot 220 lbs see I also had minor changes in EKGs

Let's cut to the chase and stop the sugar coating. You have congestive heart failure AND diabetes.

What you listed are classic signs that any first year intern would recognize;

1.pitting edema for months : heart failure is allowing fluids to be backed up, even with the excessive urination caused by your diabetes, it's STILL not enough to get rid of your fluid overload.

2. Can't get enough to drink : what is called polydypsia, or unusual thirst, because of the excess sugar in your system; is a classic sign of diabetes.

3.Going potty all the time i counted 30 times in 1 day : what is called polyuria, or grossly increased urinary frequency because the sugar in your blood is osmotically pulling more fluid into your urine; hence your bladder fills more quickly and you need to go more often. Despite this artificial diuretic (it's acting just like a water pill) activity, you still have retained fluids to the point of edema.

4. Tired all the time : Fatigue, is a non specific sign, but it fits all of the above.

You really, really need to see a doctor and get a full work up, and I apologize for being blunt. But I feel that being honest with a patient, no matter how unpleasant, is more helpful to the patient in the long run and in health care in general.

Good luck, and I wish you well.

Ralph

Pitting edema is not directly related to diabetes, it is usually related to your heart function or sitting for long periods of time or a chemical imbalance. To check for diabetes, they do a blood test.

this is not a common problem with diabetes, but poor circulation is . therefore if you are very inactive and have poor circulation you could have pitting edema.you would have had to had diabetes for a prolonged time to blame it in the diabetes.they will check for diabetes with a finger stick first. if that is abnormal the dr. will usually order another blood test that you will have to fast prior to.

Edema is more in common with some medications and heart diseases than with diabetes.

Diabetes is diagnosed with fasting glucose tolerance test, FGGT, and with blood draw, CBC, for HgA1c percentage. The CBC will tell the docs a lot of things about your health besides the A1c.

A1c of 5 or less is normal glucose percentage.
If it is 6 or more you are diabetic and need to change your lifestyle!!

I do not know the numbers for the FGGT to indicate diabetes, but you get finger stick, drink a nasty syrup, and get fingersticks for the next 2 to 4 hours. So if that is the test being done, take a good book, your knitting or something else to occupy your time.

Be sure to ask for copies of all blood work ups and other tests for your files. Do this every time you get testing. This will help you to track what is going on with your bod!!

Much good luck!! We don't really want you in our little club!! We don't really want any more new members!!!

Pitting edema is not a symptom of diabetes....it is a symptom of intermittent fluid overload or too much salt in the diet....if the pitting edema is in your legs or feet...you may want to try elevating your lower extremeties....and you might wanna cut back on foods that are high in salt...
The doctor may tell you to use some TEDS...these are stockings used to increase vascular blood flow in the extremeties...
Pitting edema may also be associated with a heart condition...like CHF, or enlargement of the heart itself...also, obesity is a cause of pitting edema.
It ( pitting edema) can be corrected and is not fatal...it is good that you are going to the doctor today....that's a good move on your part.

pitting edema is a symptom of a number of conditions, including diabetes. it can also be due to hypertension, particularly pulmonary hypertension, and conditions that disrupt your lymphatics (obesity can put too much pressure on the drainage system in your legs and result in pitting edema). only you doctor can tell the cause in your particular case. be sure to tell your doctor everything about it, even if he doesn't ask: when did it start? do you do anything for it? does it ever get better or worse on its own?

doctors can do a simple blood test to check for diabetes. in many cases, diet, exercise and getting blood sugar under good control can lessen or relieve the symptoms that you may be having.
