My mother-in law has lymph edema in her arms and hands. Is there any relief? |
Heart problems and a masectomy have left 'mom' with ongoing Chemo and severe edema in her hands and her arms. Her right arm is like a manicans arm and dark brown. She can barely bend it at the elbow and has no use what so ever in her wrist and fingers they are stiff and swollen hard. Her left arm is a little less swollen but still she can only use a little of her hand in restricted motions and her wrist does bend a little and her elbow bends a bit more. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, prolapsed disc and a few other health problems. However, I took the bull by the horns and decided to go to Pilate's! Outside of walking the dog, housework, my exercise was zero. What I liked about Pilate's Class, with a PT, they did not push you. It was not so much a question of, repetition of ten go, as in well eventually you will master this breathing exercise then once you master it we will move on, so all rather relaxed, not competitive. Likewise as it was all done on the floor, on a mat, even better! Perhaps you can find a local PT who has Pilate's Classes, or find a local Pilate's Class for your Moms age group. I often find I at 49 join classes of age 65+, because that is the age group I can keep up with. Exercise is needed to keep the lymphatic drainage going. The lymphatic system unlike the blood system does not have a pump, heart, instead it relies on the heart to circulate it. Therefore if you have a bad heart, you will have a sluggish lymphatic system. While people do not like to exercise, we really need to no matter what health problems we have. Good Luck With her medical history you should really talk to her doctor, but manual lymphatic drainage may help. |
