Why would a person have edema on one side of their body, left arm and leg?

Past medical history includes a CVA, no diabetes. Current edema in on affected side of body s/p CVA. Having a temporal artery biopsy today? unknown why this is being done.

yes, edema can effect only one side only. I do not know why, Hope you get better though, I am sure the docs know what they are doing!!

The are looking for temporal arteritis... or a vasculitis of the temporal artery.

Edema on one side of the body, which I'm assuming is the affected side from the stroke could mean that there is some sort of vascular congestion on that side of the body. From what? well if the person is not able to move that side of their body as well as the right, then the drainage system is backing up and not working properly. Could there be vasculitis involved? Yes definitely, and I would lean towards that being suspect as they are biopsing an artery today.

Because the affected side does not move the muscles some edema of that side can occur. The lymphatic return of the body is largely dependent on muscular contractions. Physiotherapy would help.

Veins on left side specially iliac veins and inferior vena cava if obstructed can cause unilateral edema.

Good question, my fiance has edema on one side of his leg and ankle too. The doctor said it was probably from a gun shot wound he had on that side long ago.

You could have CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE. The blood pools on the weaker side of the heart. You should be on lasix or something similiar to control fluid build up DONT EAT HIGH SODIUM DIET. The TEMPORAL ARTERY could be looking for a clot to PREVENT STROKE.
