Ecstasy and Depression!?

If ecstasy produces chemicals that help make you a happier person, why is it not prescribed for depressed people?
I think the goverment can't capture the market due to all the illeagal suppiers, just like weed. The goverment know's it helps cancer patients but refuses to legalize it in prescription form because it would be cheaper to purchase it on the street then at your local pharmacy!

That is a great question - you hit the nail totally on the head at the absolute ridiculousness of the supposed "war on drugs".

Why are we telling people not to take "illegal" drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy, cannabis, etc., when "legal" drugs such as prozac, seroxat and zoloft are used in pretty much exactly the same way.

It comes down to money and control. Pharmaceutical companies make billions of dollars from psychiatric drugs and GPs seem to hand them out to people like candy. And what do these drugs actually do? They certainly do not cure anyone of anything. Mental illnesses are not physical diseases. Taking prozac for "depression" is not like taking insulin for diabetes. Psychiatry is total junkscience. All these drugs do is simply change the normal chemistry of the brain to create a false psychological state. Long-term use, like any other drug, can be seriously harmful, both physically and mentally, and yet many people swear by them as some sort of modern day wonder. These same people, i'm guessing, at the same time, are probably telling their kids about the dangers of smoking weed or snorting coke...! It's totally crazy.

All psychoactive drugs are harmful, whether "legal" or "illegal". Instead of fussing about the legality and costs of recreational drugs, or being blinded by the giant pharmaceutical companies' propaganda regarding "psychiatric medications", governments should look into what is missing in society for people to turn to mind-affecting drugs in the first place.

FairyNanook, Of course... anyone who has even the slightest criticism of Psychiatry must be a Scientologist! LOL! Do me a favour! And as for your claim that "depression is a physical disease, just like every other disease out there" I would simply say this: PROVE IT! Provide me with some SCIENTIFIC PROOF! No one has been able to so far, including the NIMH, NAMI or the American Psychiatric Association. Only last July did the president of the APA, Dr. Steven Sharfstein admit that "We do not have a clean-cut lab test". Check the DSM IV and it even says it in there. There is no evidence that ANY mental illness is a physical disease. If you have been told differently then know this: YOU HAVE BEEN LIED TO. Check http://groups.msn.com/psychbusters for more info.

u wud b quite ill if u took XTC every day, &it wud cease to work. antideps pick up the peices that X leaves behind. There r far more profits made by governemt in illegal drugs than you realize.
Don't kid yourself and think they can't control street drugs - who just visited afghanistan ???? Report It

True dat.

You depressed moron.

Because it eats mass quantities of your brain..... cells that WILL NEVER re replaced.

you are right

well if you would have researched your question you would know that not only does x make you happy , but the comedown and days after causes you to become depressed. the good feeling of x only lasts till the high is over and then you could suffer the effects of depression and a lot of other effects negative that follow, so research before thinking that x is going to help you in the long run, hey i should know i used for a good 4 years and suffer everyday still

Mikewesten, You must be one of those Scientology gurus who suddenly think they know everything ever about the history of psychology. For your information, depression is a physical disease, just like every other disease out there. Just because you don't suffer from depression, doesn't mean that it doesn't exist. Considering that I have suffered from depression for over half of my life, I think I have a better understanding of it than you. And before you ask...yes, I have done my research. More than you I imagine. The drugs do not make me "happy" (like x apparently does), but rather make me stable so I don't base my life on irrational feelings that are the result of a chemical imbalance.

Why isn't x legal...well, the only thing the govt has to do with that is that the FDA has actually researched it and found it to be unsafe for prolonged (or even occasional) use. Therefore, they will not put it out like some sort of candy for people to use when they need a quick high.

For those of you who believe depression is equivalent to prolonged "sadness", you don't even have a clue. I wish it were so simple as that. Until you understand something, don't go around trying to educate others on the topic. If it were all as simple as saying, "I'm not going to be depressed anymore" a lot of people who are currently on anti-depressants would not be and there would be a lot of shrinks out of jobs. So mind your own business, and live your "ultra-happy" lives and let us take care of ourselves. This is not some "cause" you need to go around working on...free the depressed people from their imaginary disease. Please!

partly due to the fact that is causes a massive dose of serotonin to be spewed into your brain(a feel good chemical) But after the drug wears off, you crash as the serotonin levels are so depleted. Your brain just cant sustain that, and the fact that it basically eats away at your brain.

Ecstacy was used by therapists due to its ability to break down inner defenses, but the risks are too great for long term use.
