What is Transesophageal Echocardiography?

It is an ultrasound of the heart but closer. The doctors use a probe which is pass down your esophagus (food Pipe) and the ultrasound is performed from your esophagus to your heart .
The doctors will give you a strong analgesic and a relaxant medication and some spray in your mouth to numb the area. This will help you swallow the tube easily. Once the tube is in place, it wont be too uncomfortable.
The procedure takes about 15 minutes to do.
You will have to fast before the test and wait for a couple of hours before you can eat again.

TEE uses a probe down the throat to scan the heart.

well, it is quite a trip. I have had the pleasure. You have to swallow (just past) a tube with a mini-image producer, then after u swallow u get iv drugs and don't care what they are doing but u cannot laugh cause the tube prohibits this. That is, if u are cognizant of the test at all after the iv drug is given.
It provides a view of the heart (I think from the top) that a cardiac cath cannot hence giving surgeon as much info prior to going in if surgery is warranted.
