Do people die from eating disorders?

Or do they die of complications that are a result of the eating disorder?
By this I mean that eating disorders are linked to a variety of health problems including heart problems.
So when a person dies, officially, do they die of the disorder or due to for example a heart attack?
Like when a person with depression commits suicide...their cause of death isnt depression but suicide.

So what is the official cause of death as per eating disorders?

On most death certificates there is an immediate cause of death and contributing causes of death. So, for anorexia it would likely be heart failure for immediate cause of death and anorexia for contributing cause of death.
In any case, the answer is YES you can die from an eating disorder..whether it is primary or secondary cause of death is not that important.

Yes people do die from eating disorders. I agree with what you're saying about the official cause of death being a heart attack or stroke for example, but I believe it would be a heart attack as a complication of or caused by the eating disorder..

You're right. They die from the consequences of eating disorder. With bulimia it could be an electrolyte imbalance that stops the heart or with anorexia, some kind of organ failure. The rate of suicide is also high with anorexia, especially.

yes you are right about dying from the complications. So i guess they say, "yes, she died from a heart attack from having anorexia". there are many many many ways to die from eating disorders that are a result of it.

They die from complications. Anorexia you die from starvation and/or dehydrations which causes your body systems and ograns to shut down. Bulemia you die from organ/system failure as well. Plus your immune system is down due to malnutrition and many die from pneumonia.

People die of a heart attack as the diagnosis but it's the complications that actually cause the heart attack that kills them

If someone commits suicide they die from the way the committed suicide.

its like you said eating disorders mess with your body so much because your not getting the things your body needs to survive by eating.so you die from your body just not being able to take in any more,it can be in a lot of forms.you dont actually die from someone saying "hey you have anorexia".it's more complicated then that.you cant die of a diagnoses.

yes, people die from eating disorders, because a body needs all kinds of vitamins, and other healthy foods from the food groups, but when some1 has and eating disorder they dont get the amont of food and vitamins that there body needs.

I would guess "Emaciation", although there can be many things that actually cause the death to occur due to eating disorder.

Eating disorders are the origin of the problem. They are what caused death. When a person has say, anorexia and doesn't eat normally or enough food; when they do start to try and recover from that disease and start eating more, the heart will sometimes go into shock; which will cause death.
Bulimia, (eating and then vomiting after) also strains your heart, messes up your teeth, drains nutrients from your body, etc...
This also can cause death due to shock to the system.
So basically in answer to your question, the eating disorder is the root of the problem that leads to death. If there were no eating disorder to begin with, the other symptoms and health issues would not exist.

It is a guessing game. Just like life. I have been around eating disordered people for over 20 years, and I have an eating disorder that is under control. We are a nation of addicts. Food is convenient , legal, and very easy to get. So it is no wonder why we are the most overweight society on the planet. If someone wants help, really wants help there is a lot of work to do.

But to your first question. Doctors are just as clueless as everyone else is. So they will put what ever they think on the death certificate, so again it is any ones guess.

Drugs, food, alcohol, sex, anger, are killers. But our society will not wake up to this fact. They just want to bury there heads under the sand and have an oh well attitude.

This is my opinion based on my experience. My whole family died in active addiction to something.

Well, first your body stops working right. But if an eating disorder goes on for long (about 5 months) then you might die.

well anorexia and bulimia can both lead to death. While it's true that it would usually be organ failure, most commonly the heart, that is the direct cause of death that is true of many illnesses. For example when my mum died her death certificate listed heart failure AND sarcoidosis (the illness she had) as the cause of death, before she wouldn't have had one without the other. So as far as I know it is the same with an eating disorder. So it would be said you died from major organ failure and anorexia, rather than one or the other.
