Is it true that ear plugs while swimming and ear muffs during the winter will stop ear infections, or is that an old wives tale? water in the ear causes ear canal infection aka swimmers ear that are treated topically with drops. middle ear infections are common in younger children due to the eustacian tube. some culprits are smoking around children, allergies, feeding infants by propping bottle. middle ear infections need antibiotics taken by mouth. also if child has repeated middle ear infections they may be sent to ent and recommend having ventilation tubes placed in the ear.the tube allows fluid that accumulates behind ear drum(which generally progresses to infection) to drain out and reduces the number of infections and pain. the placement of tubes is a common procedure and done in the office a lot now. also treating the allergies if needed will help. if the tubes are used then you cannot allow water to get into the ears!
