Husband has on-going, irritating, distracting, depressing, loud, tintinnitis. Takes multiple meds. Solutions? |
My husband runs a stressful, large business. He suffers every day and night with tintinnitis. He had hearing loss (prior to the ringing in his ears) and has tried rx. hearing aides, and xanex and another homeopathic product from Health Food Store. Didn't work. Anyone help? He takes multiple meds for thyroid, DVT (coumadin), Abilify (recent) for mood disorder (?). He seems depressed, says "my ears are ringing". Saw audiologist who has the same condition supposedly. We paid about $2,000 for hearing aides that didn't help. Any ideas? Apparently, people have actually comitted suicide from this condition. He is not suicidal but it does affect his relationships with others and the amount of verbal information he takes in (very little). my father had constant ringing in one of his ears, it ended up being a tumor, not saying that this is what your husband is suffering from, but my dad had to go through many tests to figure out what it was and then he had to have brain surgery to remove it, now he doesnt have any ringing in his ear... Tinnitus can be caused by many things. Since it started after his hearing injury, it is a good bet his problem stems from that. My son suffers from tinnitus and he listens to a fan or even his ipod on low volume. Music does help ease the ringing and lets him sleep. This is mentioned in alot of the tinnitis literature. For people really bothered by tinnitus there is some therapy that can help it is called TRT - tinnitus retraining therapy. However it is hard to find someone who specializes in tinnitus. You need to search in your area for an audiologist who specializes in tinnitus. You may be able to ask a few ear nose throat physicians if they have any suggestions or they may know an audiologist who does these things. In addition sometimes modifying the diet to reduce sodium and caffeine can help. Tinnitus is also a side effect of some medications and if he changed medication he may be able to reduce or eliminate the tinnitus. Hearing aids do sometimes help, but not for everybody, hopefully he at least hears better with the aids. |
