What is ESRD?

What is ESRD?

End Stage Renal Disease. This is the point at which the kidneys will never recover full functioning. Patients with ESRD usually need dialysis or transplant.

end stage renal disease

ESRD stands for end stage renal disease. Basically it means that the kidneys have lost a significant amount of their function. This is generally measured by doing a standard test looking and the Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatine (CR). Normal is roughly less than 1.2. It tends to increase with age.

Usually when this happens to most people, they are considered for dialysis or renal (kidney) transplant.

I hope this helps.
