E. Coli Bacteria, Does Soap And Water Kill it Or Just Wash it away? Why do they say to wash your hands? |
I know to prevent e. coli infection they say to wash hands with warm water and soap. But my question is, does the soap and water actually kill the bacteria or does it simply remove the e. coli bacteria? I know alcohol or Peroxide doesn't kill the germ, so I'm curious as to why Soap and Water would do anything to prevent e. coli? Does it kill the bacteria or just removes it from the skin? Soap & water functions by mechanically washing away the germs and you are scrubbing. It just washes it off your skin pretty much. its not so much that soap & water KILL bacteria, its more that soap makes your hands wetter which allows germs & dirt to slide easily off of the skin. Friction is more important in ridding the hands of germs than soap. Soap just makes it easier to get the germs to wash off. Antimicrobial hand soaps (active ingredient: Triclosan) are made specifically to kill certain germs but are not all inclusive. A diluted bleach solution will kill most germs on surfaces. Alcohol does actually kill some germs. It all depends on their cellular makeup. Alcohol can be drying to the skin, so overuse can make a person more susceptible to infection b/c it provides open areas on the skin for the germs to enter the body, possibly causing infection. |
