My daughter has a severe kidney infection, caused by e-coli--the doctor says this was the most common form of?

a kidney infection..My question is how does ecoli get into your system, I thought you got it from undercooked poultry..I will ask him when he comes back into the room, they have admitted here at the hospital, I am watching her sleep she is only 14..Any answers would be greatly appreciated..

This is not the strain of e-coli from our guts that got up the urinary tract, that will produce a UTI. The infection your daughter has is from animal guts. Cows, or unpasturized juices, and others. But from animal feces. this is a systemic infection from your child eating the bacteria, the reason she got the infection is because she is young. Very dangerous and certainly deadly. My best to her I am sure she will do fine.

e-coli gets into your kidney by traveling up your urinary tract. poor higene can cause this as well as (not to say that your daughter is having sex or anything) but this happened to me after having sex a few times. usually it just manifests as a UTI but if you don't treat it in time or the antibiotics don't work it spreads to the kidneys and can actually shut them down if it is left to run its course.

E coli , as far as meat goes, lives on the surface of a cut of meat.
Say you're cooking a pot roast. The only way to kill the ecoli is to sear the outer part of the roast before you start to slow cook it.
In ground meat cause it's ground while it's raw, if there is e coli on the surface it gets ground in and if the meat isn't cooked to certain temp the e coli lives.
Also I know that if a person is infected with e coli it can be passed on through fecal matter.
I hope this lil bit helps you, friend.
I am a mother of 5.
Your daughter is young and strong and she will be OK.
Sincerely,
D

E-coli is found in fecal material. This is one of the reasons that females are taught to wipe from front to back. It can cause a serious kidney infection. I, of course, have no way of knowing what caused your daughter's infection, but I'm so glad they have identified the organism and she's getting treatment. I wish you both well.
ADDITION:
I believe Mr. Answerman is correct about the source. E coli is found in fecal material, but the strain that most commonly causes kidney infections is a dangerous strain called E. coli O157:H7. I remember that several children who had visited a petting zoo in my city a couple of years ago had this infection and ended up with serious kidney infections. FYI - all the children recuperated. Hang in there. I hope your daughter gets well soon.

mr answer is right, ecoli can travel from gut into the blood stream and infect other organs. as a dialysis tech, we dialyze ecoli infected people once in a while. i've seen people with ecoli who cant walk. if she doesnt need dialysis and seems to be doing ok she is very lucky! it'll take some time but she will be fine...ecoli can do a number on somebody no matter what age! it is from a food item: meat OR vegetables(not just meat!)
