How does e-coli get into urinary tract ?

I just learned e-coli is a common cause of urinary tract infections. Like many other people,I believed e-coli came from meats and caused illnesses in the digestive system. I love to learn and be properly informed. Thank you for your answers.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is an uncommon but serious condition that can cause life-threatening kidney failure, especially for children and older adults.

In children, most cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome develop after several days of diarrhea 鈥?often bloody 鈥?due to infection with a specific strain of Escherichia coli (E. coli) known as O157:H7. Adults also may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome after an E. coli infection, but more often the cause is obscure or even unknown.

E. coli refers to a group of bacteria normally found in the intestines of healthy humans and animals. Of the hundreds of types of E. coli, most are harmless. But a few strains of E. coli are responsible for serious food-borne infections, including those that can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome. E. coli is most often found in unwashed produce or undercooked meat. E. coli may also be present in swimming pools or lakes contaminated with feces.

In children, most cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome develop after infection with a specific strain of E. coli known as O157:H7.

It's important to remember that not all strains of disease-causing E. coli bacteria are created equal. For example, the strain of E. coli responsible for most cases of traveler's diarrhea often runs its course in just a few days. Even most people affected by the more virulent E. coli O157:H7 recover completely within five to 10 days. Progression to hemolytic uremic syndrome is uncommon.

It's also possible for hemolytic uremic syndrome in children to follow infection with other types of bacteria, including shigella, salmonella, yersinia and campylobacter.

In adults, hemolytic uremic syndrome is more likely to be caused by an autoimmune disease, a blood infection or the use of certain medications. More often, however, the cause of hemolytic uremic syndrome in adults is obscure or even unknown.-

Most healthy adults recover from E. coli illness within a week. But some people 鈥?particularly young children and older adults 鈥?may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). In this syndrome, bacterial toxins enter the bloodstream and start to destroy red blood cells. The damaged cells clog the tiny blood vessels in the kidneys, sometimes leading to kidney failure. HUS is the most common cause of acute kidney failure in children.-

Digestive system

E-Coli is normally found in all peoples bowels. It can get into the urinary system through the urethra, the passage that carries the urine out of the body.
Females have very short urethra's so they tend to have more problems with UTI's[ urinary tract infections]. After urinating it is important that women wipe from top to bottom so that they don't get E-Coli which are more numerous near the anus into their urethra.

they can migrate from the adjoining large intestine, travel up the urethra or may be introduced during catheterization uncommonly blood can be a cause.

E-coli bacteria could be present in urine if there
is a fistula present. A fistula is an abnormal
connection between organs, such as bowel and
bladder.

Systemic and local are the only two routes
