Best Birth Control if you're frequently on antibiotics?

I am 21 years old and sexually active with my boyfriend. For the past 4 years and in my childhood I've had at least 20 uti's/bladder infections/kidney infections. The confusing part is the culture ALWAYS comes back negative NOT e.coli which is the bacteria that is from sex or poor vaginal cleaning. So I'm not asking about the uti's...

I am asking women who have had recurrent (we're talking like 5 at least!) infections what birth control they use. I am on a maintenance dose of antibiotics (macrobid 200mg/day) and frequently get 10 day bouts of cipro (1000mg/day) when I have an infection. Infections seem to come in clusters that last for about 6-8months and this one just started and I am on birth control bills which obviously don't work with antibiotics. I am a nursing student so use as much medical language as you want to.

Thanks!

I understand abx are not good long term...but kidney infections are worse. and yes, my boyfriend wears a condom when i'm on abx - which could be the culprit too. I've tried switching brands a few times to see if that's the cause but it's not. The bottom line is I have frequent infections whether or not I have sex, I have a structural abnormality cannot be fixed. So I'm just looking for a reliable birth control and I've never been on anything but the pill and the shot and I hated the shot, loved the pill.

I am a pharmacist. There are no good antibiotics that you can use with birth control. All antibiotics will decrease efficacy, however the shorter the course of therapy, for example diflucan 150 mg 1 tablet treatment will be better than erythromycin or any other macrolides. Quinolone antibiotics are particulary nasty with decreasing the effectiveness of BC. I am guessing you make your bf wear a condom when you are having UTI.

Abstinent that is your best birth control.!!

Condoms or diaphrams.

something that physically blocks the sperm from entering your body.

You could look into an IUD too. It's not reliant on hormones to keep you from getting pregnant.

I have also read that the spermicides contain ingredients that some think do contribute to the cause of yeast infections.

I kind of doubt it but it could be the latex too. You might try polyurathane condoms, or natural skin condoms. Try those and don't use a spermicidal lubricant.

The natural skin ones are more expensive but it's worth it if you don't want a kid right now!

no pill is going to work for you and the patch likely won't either.

the shot could work but I've heard nothing good about it.

Look into an IUD (some Dr's will place one even if you haven't had a child)
Condoms, spermicides, diaphragms, sponges, the ring possibly.

I hope this helps but talk to a doctor.

also sex can cause bladder infections....it happens to me at least 2 times a year.

since you are a nursing student you already know antibiotics make your Birth Control less effective for 5-7 days, I take Nuva Ring and use condoms when I am anti-biotics.

wast the money=vinegar an water it D's the same thing

too much anti biotics are not good for you long term.

IUD.
Vasectomy.

It would be best to keep using the birth control, but also use condoms while you are on the antibiotics.
