Will an open wound exposed to fecal matter make a person sick?

If a person has an open wound, and that wound comes in contact from feces, say from changing a diaper, could the person get e.coli? Also, what other toxins in the home could cause infections in someone with an open wound, and where would those toxins be so I can wipe them down. Thanks!

Absolutely. E-coli introduced directly into the blood stream can have serious consequences. It can even be deadly. You need to get that person tested immediately. This person can develop a infection going throughout the body called Sepsis. This really needs to be taken care of immediately to see if IV anti-biotics are necessary. Have I impressed upon you the seriousness of the situation. See the doctor ...today.

If you didn't clean it, yes. If your on antibiotics and cleaned it after exposure then most likely not. Clean the kitchen and bathroom, 2 of the most bacteria populated places in the home.

Any open wound can get infected. Feces is never good. Keep everything as clean as possible. Try to keep the wound dry and covered. Wear latex gloves when changing baby if the wound is on your hand.

Toxins can be found anywhere...toilet handles, refrigerator door handles, remote controls, telephones, kitchen sinks, countertops, etc. Cover the wound, clean and keep everything clean.

An open wound may become infected with all manner of bacteria. Sepsis could develop, and staph for example could make its way to the heart. The danger depends upon the area and depth of the wound.

e coli is correct, and you can get hand santizer
