Dyslexia?? |
My 4 year old has barely learned to right his name. Once in a while he will write it from right to left and every letter is backwards. It looks right in a mirror! Is this something I should be concerned about? an evaluation would be wise, but certainly no rush. The uniqueness of dyslexia is incredible, many hidden talents commonly evolve. I would say, wait until Kindergarden and counsol with the teacher letter reversals are common in young children. Does he have any early warning signs of Dyslexia like late speech,speech problems of any kind,difficult with rhyming,family history of Dyslexia or other related issues........there is auditory or and visual dyslexia. yea, you might want to get that checked out. stuff like that can turn serious I'd hate to tell you but that is one of the symptoms of dyslexia, althought at his age I wouldn't be too worried. The kid is a prodigy. Nurture him I think it'd be a good idea to get him tested for dyslexia ASAP, although many schools do that when the child is enrolled for kindergarten. It may just be a phase that he's going through, or there may be some kind of underlying learning problem going on. Because of his age, it may or may not be dyslexia. Okay, this is how my stepmom taught me tie my shoes, she got from behind me and did it for me. Same idea, get behind him and write his name. Show him how it needs to look from pretty much his eyes. I'm an RN and the educatioal approach to this is not to make a big deal about it . At age 4 to 6 years it is quite common and many children will change on their own as they mature. You might have examples of their printed name on some of their belongings at home including maybe their name on their bedroom door so that they will begin to recognize their own name but otherwise take a passive approach without putting any pressure on the child. I've learned from personal experience that this approach can work. If the problem continues past 7 or 8 years then special help for the child is required. Good luck to you.
