Is dyslexia genetic?

Ok so my son's father has dyslexia and it is not a mild case it is a severe case of it. So I was wondering my son isnt old enough just yet to tell if he will have dyslexia (he's only 9 months old) but I was wondering if it is genetic and if it can be improved?

No, my mother had severe dyslexia actually thought to be brought on by her being malnourished. She was in foster homes for 7 years before she was adopted. Her dyslexia is almost gone althought she says time to time she may transpose things. Neither my brother nor I has issues with dyslexia. In fact, it is not a genetic disease.

Dyslexia is genetic....the neurologists even told my Dyslexia and Dyspraxia are genetic.

both my parents had Dyslexic,Dyspraxic,AHD traits.....so did my mother's relatives.

Dyslexia is not a disease either. Report It

another thing about Dyslexia
true Dyslexics think mainly in pictures instead of words...they have strong 3D visualization abilities. They are strong visual thinkers.
They tend to be lefthanded, ambidextrous,or cross dominant(righthanded but left ear and/or left eye dominant. Report It

no, I don't think so

if you teach your son very well, your son will be no longer having a dyslexia.

due to lack of reading, they don't want to read everyday

reading is good to learn and feed your brain with good education

yes dyslexia can be treated if it is noticeable at a very early time like when your son is beginning to learn to read.

Dyslexia describes a general term for primary reading disorder. Diagnosis is based on intellectual, educational, speech and language, medical, and psychologic evaluations. Treatment is primarily educational management, consisting of instruction in word recognition and component skills. Dyslexia tends to run in families. Children with a family history of reading or learning difficulties are at higher risk.

Learning disorders tend to run in families. Developmental reading disorder (DRD) is one kind of learning disorder. Affected families should make every effort to recognize existing problems early.
For families without a previous history of learning disabilities, an intervention can begin as early as preschool or kindergarten if teachers detect early signs. Early intervention will provide the best possible outcome.(MedlinePlus)
Dyslexia is thought to be both genetic and hereditary. (Wikipedia)
