Down syndrome? why are they look similar to each other??

Down syndrome? Why do children & adults have the same facial characteristics?? Eventhough they are not related by blood ? or are they?

TO Julie who wrote
"notice the common characteristics of the "syndrome" and don't know how to look past it, or want to look past it...they are different from "typical" society so they are labeled. "

PLEASE DO NOT incinuate that I want to label people with Down Syndrome. Or pick them out from "typical Society". I had really great luck on Yahoo answers with good people that answer my questions with honesty and clarity, for sometimes YES, I do not walk on water and know all the answers, I had this curiosity of why do they have similar features, thats all. why do they????
I speak my mind. I am curious. Thats all.
oh, just to let you know, My older brother(Claudio) 44yrs old is scitzophrenic for most of his adult life. So if someone may have a question on the subject, and I can answer it honestly I will, just to help out someone else.
Thank you.

The abnormality is three copies of chromosome 21 (normally there are only two copies). This causes defects in the metabolism and morphology of the cells in the patient's body. Because it always affects the same chromosome in the same general way, the similarities have been noted.

There are SIGNIFICANTLY different degrees of severity. Some will not live very long at all (days) and others will survive 30-50 years.

Well, of course all Down's patients aren't related. Don't be silly. This will explain:

its not that they look the same its just that most people with down syndrome have facial paralysis. not all of people with down syndrome have the same face, its just some of them

It is the chromosomal abnormalities that make them look alike. They all have the same problem with the same chromosome, so of course they look alike. No, they aren't all related. But the same facial features are there because of the problem.

you know something?.....I have to laugh every time this question comes up. children and adults with down syndrome do NOT look alike!!!!!..some of the facial characteristics of down syndrome are: almond shaped upward slanting eyes, broader nose, ears that are lower on the head, larger tongue, smaller pallet brushfield spots in the eyes (makes their eyes sparkle) etc. each individual is different...some may have all of the characteristics of DS, while others may only have one or two they are as varied as you and I and they do inherit features from their parents as all human beings do.
I think why so many people believe they all look similar is because they notice the common characteristics of the "syndrome" and don't know how to look past it, or want to look past it...they are different from "typical" society so they are labeled.
As for facial paralysis? (stated by someone else's answer)OMG that is a bunch of crap....and no they are not related.

I have a son who has DS sometimes I see the characteristics that others see. The flat bridge nose, slanting eyes, small ears all of that. It isn't know yet why they have some of the characteristics of others with DS.
