How to overcome the depression after divorce?

How to overcome the depression after divorce?

My Mom experienced serious depression after the divorce from my Dad, even though she's the one who pushed hardest for it. She felt that the world existed in couples and that all her old friends were deserting her now that she was on her own. There were financial hardships too, and troublesome teenagers to try to raise by herself. The way she evenutally overcame her depression was first to hit rock bottom. You can't rebuild until you hit the bottom. Then, she joined a singles club for over 40's. It wasn't some group of weirdos - just a group of people who were lonely and needed company from people just like them. Eventually, she met the guy who is now my step dad. Strength comes from Community, and that's how she turned her life around - by being with people who were going through the same experience as her.

While I don't agree with Patrick about needing to hit rock bottom, I DO agree that getting out among people helps a lot. Perhaps you could consider doing some volunteer work.

And, as always, don't be afraid to talk to your doctor.

Lean on Patrick's shoulder. He's a strong guy. I wouldn't go to a shrink unless absolutely necessary (they mess with your head to keep you coming back)

Also, get another man to plug the void. Emotional void, that is.

I also agree with Patrick; however, if you are not the type to socialize, then get a hobby. Pick up something that you've always wanted to do and take a class or learn online. Keep busy: physically and mentally. Have goals, and write down how you will achieve them. Divorce can be something that sets you free to be your own person. Maybe now is the time to get that college degree you wanted, or do volunteer work, or go on a trip!
