Can people with diverticulitis or diverticulosis drink alcohol?

Hi Miho,
That is a very good question. Diverticulosis has been attributed to a low fiber, high processed diet. Diverticulitis occurs when the diverticuli become infected and inflamed. One can drink alcohol with diverticulosis, but it should be avoided when diverticulitis occurs. However I recommend avoidance alcohol for both diverticulosis and diverticulitis. The primary reason is that diseases of the bowel are worsened by alcohol. Because one already has a compromised bowel with diverticulosis, one should take special precautions in preventing complications that can arise from intestinal disease. Not only do I recommend avoiding alcohol, but changing lifestyle habits to low fat, high fiber and regular exercise as allowed by ones physician. I have included information on a high fiber diet.
