Shoulder dislocation?

any whos dislocated a shoulder, tell me your stoire about how you did it and your recovery, and tell me about if you needed surgery....PLEASE?

I had a psycho exhusband who dislocated it several times... my advice for you, listen to the doctor!! I didn't listen the first time, listened to my husband instead and took the sling off too early...never did heal right.

Good luck

I've been there. I have had surgery twice. I've also made the mistake of rushing too quickly rather than giving my body the proper time to heal and doing all the proper physical therapy. If you do have surgery I would recommend going to a specialist if you can afford it. Also, there are different types of surgery. I had the Putty Platt the first time and it didn't work. The second time I had the Bankart Surgery and that worked much better. It all depends on what the damage to your shoulder was but if they recommend Putty Platt I'd get a second opinion. Also, try to find out how many shoulder surgeries per year your surgeon performs. The more they perform the better. If they're just doing 5 or 10 shoulder operations a year you might want to go to someone with more experience.

But, whether or not your doctor recommends surgery or just physical therapy, the main thing I can advise from all my years of dealing with this is do the physical therapy consistently. That is the most important thing I've learned. If I had to do it all over again that's the one thing I would try to do more of. The other thing I've learned is to take it slow. This is a marathon race and not a sprint. Also, if the physical therapist goes too fast in terms of explaining what you need to do then stop him and make him explain it again. They're getting paid a lot of money so make sure to ask them lots of questions.

Regarding motivation, I found the that the book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey has helped me tremendously in my recovery. Dr. Covey always stresses that there are no quick fixes and that "a thousand mile journey begins with a first step." I bought his book on tape and when I'm too lazy to do PT I listen to it and it helps mottivate me.

If you're in the Northeast I'd recommend the Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell in New York or the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Best of Luck.
