What is more pain full, a fracture or a dislocation?

I can dislocate very easily and in the last 2 months i have dislocated both my knees and my thumb, also in the last year i have fractured my hand, wrist, foot and ankle.A few times i have fractured and dislocated at the same time and when doing this all i feel is pain and i would like to know what is causing most of the pain, the dislocation or the fracture. If you know because you are either a doctor or have had similare experiences could you please tell me as i would really like to know!

i think it would be very dependent on where both the fracture and dislocation occur. and what other structures are damaged in the process. fractures can damage a lot of the surrounding soft tissue and pierce the skin (compound fracture). a dislocation would also hurt a very large amount as well and soft tissue - ligaments, tendons and muscles are stretched and torn.

as far as which causes more pain when you have both at the same time it doesn't really work like that. the brain prioritises new signals over repeating ones - thats why staying still can help. also holding someones hand/rubbing it can reduce pain. the new signals can, to use a clich茅, drown out the signals of pain.

distraction itself is a very powerful analgesic as the brain filters more pain signals out. morphine also instructs the brain to filter more aggressively.

hope this answers your query

i have done both also!! i have fractured my rt. leg, and dislocated my rt. shoulder 4 times, id have to say the dislocation is much more painful!! cant even move my arm when this happens to my shoulder, the pain is excruterating!!
shoulder dislocates sometimes at night when im sleeping, and i wake up in sooo much pain, i cant stand it,, pain goes away when it goes back into place,, ive had two surgeries on it already, and there is no tissue left, to try another surgery.. good luck, i know how you feel.

Well I dislocated three toes and it was horrible.

And snapped off the bottom three inches of my left leg, both bones, and no pain at all until I woke up after surgery. The healing process was very painful. Three months in a wheel chair and another six weeks on crutches.
