Weight lifting after a shoulder dislocation?

I dislocated my shoulder about 3 months ago playing hockey. Had a sling on for 3 weeks, done physical therapy for 5 weeks. All of the pain is gone. I have no problem playing hockey and other sports.
My question is, is it safe to resume weight lifting? Benching in particular.
I have been doing curls with 30 pound weights and it's no problem at all. It seems like when benching there is a lot more force put on the shoulders, so I want to make sure it's safe to do that. I blame myself for not remembering to ask the therapist or the doctor about it.

Should I start slow or just forget about benching?

You should totally start lifting again. Not only will it help your shoulder regain strength, but it may help your ligaments to tighten again and prevent another dislocation.

HOWEVER, please speak with your doctor AND Physical Therapist before starting lifting again with that shoulder. Your PT in particular will probably have some guidlines for you about what weights to start with and how often you can increase the weigh/reps, etc.

Also, look into getting massage for your rotator cuff muscles, as this will also help improve your shoulders range of motion and overall health by improving circulation and bringing in nutrients.

Hope this helps!

Start slow, BUT please play it safe.

well it depends on the original grade of dislocation, if you can麓t go to your orthopedist but have your x-rays go to someone else, if not try calling your orthopedist, and ask him about rehab too
