Is it just me, or has suicide become a more controversial subject than homicide?

Why is it that we're more upset over someone taking their own life, than the deaths of millions due to war, natural disasters, etc?
Why is crime and homicide almost glorified in our culture, with the vast amounts of mystery and horror in entertainment?

And yet we see suicide as somehow outside of this, more upsetting than this?

I don't understand. Give me your opinions, please.

Hell...do I have to threaten to kill myself to get an answer here?

People certainly jump to those questions.

suicide just happens less often, so when it happens we are more shocked by it. we have become desensitized to death caused by others or natural disasters because the news has talked about it until we just don't care anymore, it's a terriable thing not to be shocked by the death of another, but we've had sensory over load.

It's not glorified. It's not easy to understand. We understand death by war or act of God. Suicide seems pretty alien to most of us. It does to me.

Suicide makes me sad. I think of the fact that I might have lost a potential friend.

Murder makes me angry and sad. Whenever I think of one of those people that took some hostages and shot them and then killed themselves; I always wish that they had decided on suicide first.

Most of us don't want crime and homicide to be glorified. However, most of us have come to the point that we are just dealing with the fallout from crime. There is a lot of research being done and steps being taken to try to identify what causes children to turn to crime. I don't know what more can be done; it is just getting worse.

I think the reason most of us are upset about someone taking their own life is that there may be something we can do about that. We can have better mental health care available to all regardless of insurance status. We can try to remove younger people from abusive situations, so that they do not feel as if suicide if the only answer.

Another reason that suicide is has become so controversial is because of medical advances. People who have debilitating, incurable illnesses can be kept alive inside their poor, pain-wracked bodies for an exorbitantly length of time. The controversy comes in where is a fine line between refusing further treatment and allowing the person to die. Many people would prefer to die rather than live in pain. Is this suicide or just refusing further medical treatment?

I agree with you 100% though I do think suicide is a big issue for society too. If there was less crime and violence toward others society as a whole would be much better off and that should be our focus.

The only solution that someone like me can do is to make sure the elected officials know that I want them to make crime, especially violent crime the number one priority.

Thank you for your question.

A friend of mine killed him self last year. He left behind a wife
and five children. I think people focus on suicide alot more
sometimes because people just don't get how final death is
until someone takes their life. Our daily problems in life are
something we all struggle with at some point, and some more
than others.

Most of us manage and don't think of suicide instead we value
life, and make the most of it. As far as war and hate crimes
and so on, well, it's just not the same thing. Killing people is
just not acceptable but we hear about it all the time on the news
and maybe because we hear about it so often, people just
arn't as affect by it. Life is a gift and for some it takes many
years for people to understand that. So when someone takes
their life it is really a sad thing.

I think they should report in the news when someone jumps off a bridge or building, etc. News reporters are forbidden to report on suicides for fear of people copying what they see on TV. I think they should report on it and bring more awareness and government funding to mental illness.
