Question for persons with disabilities.?

I'm a self defense instructor for a University in Canada and have been assigned to create a self defense program for persons who use our wheelchair sports facility.

I have no experience with regards to this and was wondering if I could get some insight into personal safety concerns or issues that you have with regards to being a target of crime or a violent attack.

Right now, I do not have any specific direction I'm taking with the course, but I would like to create a program which emphasizes personal safety practices, along with self defense techniques. You can send any correspondence to here and perhaps further discussions can be arranged.

Thank you in advance for your participation,
respectfully
IPH.

I do not have a disability but may be able to help (I am researching disability and have worked with people with disabilities).

Some ideas:
1. Teach empowerment, practice yelling "No!". We recommend that clients yell "Fire". People will come running if they think their home or business is on fire.
2. Use the wheelchair to block the person trying to attack.
3. Do not leave bags etc hooked on the back of the wheelchair - these can be easily stolen. Keep bag etc on your lap.
4. Do not have the brakes of the wheelchair at a place that another person can easily put them on (stopping the chair instantly)
5. If possible, take off the handles at the back of the wheelchair when they are not needed. These handles are used for other people to push the chair - making it easier for a predator to change the direction of the wheelchair.
6. If the person has problems communicating, have an alarm/panic alert handy at all times.
7. Teach the usual techniques (eye gouging, punching etc) with a few changes (insted of kicking in the groin - punch in the groin).

If you would like any more information or want to discuss it further - email me!

Good luck!
