Blood test for person with learning disabilities? |
Can someone please help. My client has Cerebral Palsy and is due a blood test next week. He has a good level of reason and communicates through Makaton sign language. He had his annual check-up yesterday, but as soon as blood tests were mentioned he got very scared. If anyone can provide some advice or any links to illustrations that might help that would be great. Thanks. it is a phobia, and like any phobia reassurance and confidence is the only real answer. if he is scared that it might hurt him maybe he could have emla cream on one hour before it is used for children, it is an anaesthetic First and foremost I am sure you are qualified enough and certified to handle patients. if this is so then you must be aware of the channels of your consultation. Most people are skeptical about blood tests (because of fear of being found HIV positive), I am given to understand that there are various tests you can carry out on a blood sample, you didnt specify the type of test to be carried out on your patient so it is difficult to give a clear answer, however in every test, clearly explain to your client your intentions and actions so that you can your patient's coperation. Counselling is important in all cases that are difficult to handle. Any referal to an experienced counsellor will greatly benifit your patient. he is obviously frightened of needles ....my son is 15 and he is petrified of injections so much so he hasnt had his tb jab or the little 6 ones you have prior to the tb...he was petrified of the dentist just as much, but he has overcome the fear of the dentist but no way is he having any needle put in him |
