Tuberculosis (TB) remains an uncommon disease in Victoria and Australia. While TB is an infectious disease that can be spread when a person with active TB coughs, it can be effectively treated with medications.

TB infection and active TB are different
Not everyone infected with the TB germ has active TB disease. Only people with active disease (such as TB in the lungs or, very rarely, a weeping ulcer caused by a TB infected lymph node) can pass infection to another person.

When infection is passed on, the person who is infected may never develop active disease. Only about ten per cent of people infected with TB develop active TB disease.

TB can only be passed on when the disease is active
Newly infected people who do not have active disease cannot transmit infection to another person. There are medications available to help reduce the risk of developing active disease.

Active TB disease makes you ill
Some of the symptoms of TB disease include:

Persistent cough
Tiredness
Night sweats
Weight loss
Coughing up blood.
