I just found out I am borderline diabetic - with low blood sugar ....?

Today I just found out I have borderline diabetes, got a 5.6 out of 6.0 on the test. Apparently its from low blood sugar, anyone have any useful tips or websites I can check out for dietary reasons. I also found out I am anemic - not sure if the two are interrelated. The doctor told me no meds to take yet. I am 34 and thought I was eating pretty good, seems like a history of this in my family but I guess I was told I was pretty young for this. No, I am not over weight, 20 pounds under my max weight. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks -

* I fasted nbm from midnite the nite before the test. The test came up low blood sugar - I have had dizzy / light headed symptoms. I told the doctor, I have had to carry a snack or juice now when I feel light headed, usually subsides within hour or so after eating it.

If you were diabetic, and you haven't been taking any treatment for diabetes, wouldn't you have HIGH blood sugar?

Diabetes is when you're not producing insulin, or when its not working properly. Insulin lowers blood sugar by converting it to glycogen. So if your insulin isn't doing the job, you should have HIGH blood sugar.

And diabetes and anaemia are un-related.

You can have low blood sugar its called hypoglaecemia and comes because you are not eating enough food that lasts to the next mealtime or just not eating enough.

You need to be eating a diet high in fibre, high in vitamins but low in processed carbohydrates such as bread, cakes, sweets and sweet drinks. If you have a tendency to low blood sugar you need to eat some carbohydrates but go for ones with fibre as they will 'last' longer in your system.

The food you eat or drink raises your blood sugar very quickly and then it drops away over a period of minutes or hours. You need to eat food that gives you lower high but takes longer to drop away such as porage, brown rice, wholemeal bread. Try having a look for low GI (Glycaemic Index) diets.

And 34 is not especially young for this problem. I was glucose intolerant throughout my 20s. Had I known what having diabetes was like then, I would have been far more careful about my diet and weight!

you are describing hypoglycemic.......low blood sugar.
having low blood sugar one must eat some often and have sweets with them all the time. ..

anemic is when ones red blood cells are under their normal count. your doctor will have to do more test to determine what is the cause of that. there could be many difference reasons why red cells are down.....some bad, but some could be serious and even cause death.

diabetics have high blood sugars.....
no borderline in being a diabetic.......either one is or isn't.
when ones pancreas stop producing insulin and ones metabolism slows down then blood sugars goes high. now that person is a diabetic.

All foods are converted into glucose by the body.
Fats in 6-8 hours or more, Proteins (meat, eggs, beans) in 3-4 hours, and Carbohydrates in 30 minutes. Carbohydrates include starches such as rice, pasta, breads and cereals.
A proper diet will combine fats, carbohydrates, and proteins at each meal, to provide nutrients and create an even release of glucose into the blood. Whole Grain carbohydrates turn into sugar slowly and help keep the blood sugar stable.
Avoid sugar and high amounts of carbohydrates. Eat moderate, balanced meals at regular times.

i had same trouble with my test from local doctor, but when i went to clinic at hospital it was normal, so get it checked again if you are concerned
