Dietary advice for a client with constipation? |
How might you explain the importance of dietary fiber and fluids to a client who frequently experiences constipation? I've heard that half your weight in water ounces is recommended daily. So if the client weighs 130lbs he/she should drink 65 ounces daily. I'd suggest eating 40-45g of fiber daily to start; if that's too much, decrease to 35g daily. The Fiber 35 Sprinkle Fiber is a great product. And I like 2 packets of Sturm's Oatmeal in the morning to start the day off with 12g of fiber. There's a Dieter's tea, that could be used a couple times a week as well. The importance of losing waste-- is to promote better health, and minimize the retention of toxins in the body, which I believe can lead to colon cancer and polyps. However, I'm not sure what specifically causes polyps, I think the unnecessary retention of waste in the colon can contribute to the polyps. You might have your client strive towards 2 healthy evacuations daily--and if 3 can be reached, then the client's on target.. I also agree that regular exercise contributes towards assisting waste elimination. Good luck... Fluid intake from water is preferable and especially if you increase your fiber intake, as the fiber absorbs water in the intestines. A minimum of 8 glasses per day, say 1 every hour is good. Fiber can be from bran or fruits and vegetables. Exercise can help relieve constipation too. The more you drink, the more easily things come out. If you drink the water and eat the foods containing fiber, it will help your colon stay healthy and keep you from getting hemorrhoids. |
