Diarrhea caused by antibiotics? |
I believe I may have contracted diarrhea from taking the antibiotic Clindamycin. I started taking it last Wednesday and the diarrhea didn't start until Sunday morning. I stopped taking the antibiotic Tuesday but still have diarrhea this morning. If it is antibiotic related diarrhea should it clear up soon or could I have this for a while? I have absolutely no other symptoms. Yes, the diarrhea is likely a side effect of the antibiotic. Antibiotics aren't bacteria specific, they kill the lot- even those good buddies you need to run a healthy colon. However, you still need to take the antibiotics- the full course that you were given. Otherwise you can develop a rebound infection and the Clindamycin might not work. Since you are bound to get the diarrhea again, you can adjust things to compensate for it. For starters, you need to cut out the dairy because those are the primary bacteria that are going to get wiped out. Eat bananas, rice, apples/applesauce, and white bread every day. You can eat pretty much anything you like otherwise, although you may want to ease up on fats and whole grains, and avoid anything that usually gives you gas or looser stools. When you finish up the antibiotics, you need to eat a carton of live active culture yogurt, at least one a day for 2-3 days to replenish the normal gut bacteria. Then you can go back on your dairy products. While you have the diarrhea, you might want to pamper your backside some by switching out the dry toilet paper in favor of baby wipes with aloe or vitamin E. It's a lot easier on the "personality" than paper. You can also help soothe things with a cotton pad soaked in witch hazel or Tucks hemmorhoidal pads. As long as this is the only problem, it's irritating but not deadly and can be somewhat controlled long enough to let you finish your medications. And be sure to drink more liquids to compensate for the loss from the diarrhea. Any liquid except dairy and alcohol will do. Well, not prune juice, but you get the picture. You should never sop your antibiotic early or youll end up with supergerms!! Some people get diarrhea from antibiotics. It can be from the antibiotic killing the normal flora in your GI tract. Yogurt can help replace this flora Eat yogurt. Antibiotics are made to kill all bacteria. Good and bad. What makes the "flow" in your stomach work properly is the good bacteria. Eat some yougurt. Preferably the ones with the least sugar ie. plain. It should help. antibiotics kill the good bacteria as well as the bad, you need to re-introduce the good bacteria into your body, eat yogurt with active cultures, drink buttermilk. or use Activia, any of these will help think it takes a while for the antibiotic to wear out of your system .. id wait a week and if youre still getting it go back to docs ... hope you feel better soon. |
