Diarrhea after Gallbladder removal?

I had my gallbladder taken out 5 years ago and I have a serious problem with Diarrhea after I eat anything and sometimes just when I drink something anyone have any idea whats up.. I have been to a few doctors and they have ran some test and everything is ok. Just went to a doctor on monday who gave me qeutran and its been working. Called is Bile Salt Diarrhea anyone heard of it??

we ll i know several people whom have the same problem inclueding my self its absolutely terrible when you have the urge to go you have to right then no if ands or buts about it i actually had dropped my daughter off at school and in town u cant just find a place to go asap so i hurried Thur a stop 2 blocks from home and got hit ~~~~sounds crazy but true i thought id never make it home i told the driver that hit me to meet me at my address 2 blocks away!!!!!!!!!i keep tissue in the car and take med just in case and if I'm ever planning a big nite out i wont eat ~~~~~~~so that's the bad part of the gall bladder removal good luck!!!!!!!!

I have never heard of it. I have heard of people who get sick eating things after having the gall bladder out, the same things they ate & got sick on before the gall bladder was removed. I hope the diarrhea doesn't last much longer. Glad the medicine is working.

I had my gall bladder out and for quite a while I had real trouble digesting fatty foods. Avoid foods high in fat and avoid things that are fried. See if this helps the diarrhea. I also had trouble with salads or other raw foods like fruits. Eventually, I was able to eat these things again in small quantities. I never was able to tolerate coffee again. It gives me bad abdominal pain, although tea doesn't. Glad the medicine is helping. It is really trial and error to determine the foods you can now tolerate. Good luck.

The function of bile is to improve fat digestion and absorption. It is secreted into the duodenum (upper intestine) just after the outlet of the stomach, in response to fat in a meal. Bile salts/acids (basically the same thing) are re-absorbed in the lower intestine and recirculated to the liver. In a healthy normal person, almost all of the bile excreted in response to a meal is reabsorbed.

Diarrhea is quite common in the setting of gall bladder removal. Since you no longer have a "pouch" in which to store the bile your liver makes, it continuously drains into your intestine. This induces diarrhea, the "bile salt" or "bile acid" diarrhea you are experiencing. Excess bile salts irritate the intestine and cause water secretion, resulting in diarrhea.

It is unusual to have such severe diarrhea so long after having the gall bladder removed. You might be producing more bile acid than normal for some reason.

You were prescribed Questran (cholestyramine) to bind up all those excess bile acids so they no longer affect the intestine. There are other (newer, more efficient) products available as well, so if Questran doesn't work to your satisfaction, try colestipol or WelChol.
