Exactly how does diarrhea affect the Pill?

In order to render the Pill ineffective, do you have to have diarrhea x times a day for a given number of days, or does any episode of diarrhea make the Pill less effective? What if you'd taken the Pill the night before (ie 10-12 hours) the diarrhea hit? Wouldn't it have absorbed by then?

Sorry for the sort-of gross question, but the Pill pamphlet isn't specific about it and I've been wondering. I take Yaz at 9pm each night, if that helps. Any *actual* answers would be greatly appreciated!

I understand, mlgable. However, the pill pamphlet clearly states that the Pill may be less effective in the case of vomiting or diarrhea.

I usually give it 8-10 hours before I'm concerned. It has to go through your digestive track to get into your bloodstream. Being that I'm not ready for another pregnancy, I'll take my precautions if I have diarrhea (especially harsh) within 8-10 hours of taking the pill.

Diarrhea does not affect the pill. It is absorbed into your BLOOD STREAM not your digestive tract.

shouldn't affect it at all

I wouldn't think unless you were having explosive diarreah that was constant that it would truly affect it. the hormones go in your blood stream, and unless things were goin pretty much strait through you, or you threw it right back up you should be ok. especially if it had been 10-12 hours, it would be totally in the blood stream by that time so you should be ok.

P.S. I take yaz every night at 9 too!

If you had a first episode of diarrhea within 90 minutes of taking the pill, I would use a backup barrier method until the next pack of pills is started, just to be on the safe side - it *should* be absorbed from your stomach within 30 minutes, but you know what they say about assuming. (However, vomiting is a bigger concern - if you vomit anytime within 2 hours of taking the pill!)

I think if it's 10 hours after you take it, you should be good. It should be absorbed by then. As long as it's not for days in a row. If you're concerned, just use extra protection for a week.
