How do I treat a SEVERE diaper rash caused by antibiotics?

My 6-month old was prescribed Ceftin for treatment of pnuemonia. It is curing the bacteria, however she is suffering from a painful diaper rash. Both she and I cry. Her from the pain when rinsing her off with water and me from feeling bad. What can I do for now. I plan on calling my pediatrician first thing tomorrow morning.

@ whitedov, I have heard cornstarch works also but I have also heard it make matters worse. I don't know, I will give it a try though. most old wives tales work!!!

Everyone else, thank you for your responses!!!!!

PS- has anyone used Lotrimin or any other anti-fungal creams on their infant? any bad side-effects???

try and keep the diaper off as much as possible or change very regularly.

Get a good probiotic like Primadophilus reuteri to add back the good bacteria the antibiotics killed. (helath food shop/betterlife.com. Its the Best treatment for skin conditions like eczema etc, which is due to internal problems

Good luck

You might want to see a doctor about this one. Blisters from anitbiotics are a pretty severe alergic reaction and it's pretty serious. I'm not trying to scare you, but you should get to your doctor pretty soon.

Untill then, try putting triple antibiotic cream on it if you think it's ok. I don't know if babies can't have that or not...

do you have any monistat cream to put on it

Place her in some soothing tepid water and then let her bottom air dry. Keep her diaper off as much as you can. The moist heat of the diaper will only make it worse against her delicate skin. Because the rash came after a treatment with antibiotics it is most likely a yeast type of rash. Best medicines are antifungals like ones with miconazole or lotrimin.

The rash is probably caused by yeast. I agree with the other poster - Monistat!

in my day a day off a while ago they used cornstarch on diaper rashes as it helps dry up the blisters however the doctors of today may say it is a just a wifes tale none the less it sure worked for my 3 childern as needed.
