Do diaper rashes ever have circles?

my daughter has a rash on her butt. there are two circles on each cheek. im worried it could be ring worm because her grandfather had ring worm recently and didnt know he had it at first so it could have been passes to his girlfriend and she has changed my daughters diaper . i was just wondering if diaper rashes ever show up in little circles or if it could be a sign of some other sickness?

Here's some information to tell the two apart:

Yeast is by far the most common type of organism found in a diaper rash. The organism is quite prevalent and thrives in warm, moist skin. Yeast involvement should be suspected in any diaper rash that has not improved dramatically with 72 hours of appropriate therapy. Current or recent antibiotic use makes a yeast infection even more likely, since this reduces the amount of the skin's 'good' bacteria that fight infection. Classically, a yeast rash is beefy red with sharp raised borders and white scales. Small satellite lesions surround the main rash. Even without the classic pattern, yeast is often present. Yeast is a natural organism found in feces. (yeast is a type of fungi)

Ringworm is more directly contagious from others or pets. It typically causes reddened scaley 1-2cm lesions that itch. A number of different species of fungi cause ringworm (no real 'worm' here). Dermatophytes of the genera Trichophyton and Microsporum are the most common causative agents. Both causitive agents thrive in wet, moist, dark environments - perfect for a baby's diaper.

Since they are both fungi, you can treat both of these essentially the same way - take away the elements that they thrive and it sometimes improves. You can also use an antifungal cream or ointment on the lesions too. Lamisil cream used for 'jock itch' is a good example.

I hope this helps.

go get her checked. sounds to me like ringworm. i've never seen diaper rash in circles.

Hello Blondie,
The answer to your question is NO. There is no such thing as circular diaper rashes. It is definitely RING WORM (which is classified as a fungus) and can be treated by applying Clotrimazole 1% topical solution or Lamisil....these medications are to kill fungus and believe it or not they can be used by men for jock itch ==. Follow the directions on the bottle.....clean thoroughly with soap and water then then dry completely...and apply a thin layer of the solution to affected area(s) in the morning and before bedtime. The reason I am recommending the solution is because with a solution you get better penetration into the skin than with a cream or an ointment. It may take up to 2 to 4 weeks for it to go away. If around any longer you need to take your daughter to her pediatrician...........I want to wish you the best of luck with this situation and may God bless and keep your precious little girl SAFE.
