For those on dialysis?

Why is it MOST dialysis patients are non-compliant. I have seen patients one day and we pull 6 pounds of fluid off and they come back in tow days and have 20 pounds gained. Is it because they realize they willget mostof it removed? Howeverm they must realize, it is not healthy to remove so much weight via dialysis in one treatment.

It is a matter of control. There are so many things that dialysis patients are told to do. Be at the clinic at this time... Sit in that chair without moving your arm for 4 hours... Don't eat this... Eat more protein... Take all your medication... and above all DON'T DRINK TOO MUCH! Sometimes it's just too much.

It's also one of those things where once you're told you can't have it, you crave it. I tried doing the Atkins diet one time, and I've never crave bread more in my life. Once I gave up on the diet, I binged on bread and carbs, mostly because I was told I shouldn't eat it.

In regards to your last comment, most patients don't realize how hard it is on their body to gain and lose so much fluid that quickly. In much the same way they don't realize how hard it is on their heart to be on a K-1 acid bath during their treatment (for their internal potassium level to change that quickly).

Could not have said it better Dave. They are rebellious to get control of an uncontrollable situation. Dialysis RN for over 18 years. Report It
