Hey all, anyone diabetic?

Hello! Are any of you diabetic and what type are you?

Just wondering because I was fealing a little bit alone today (even though I know I am not). I'm in high school, and someone was giving out cupcakes in my band class, and I couldn't have any (I'm 16, and a type 1 and was diagnosed mid january this year). I was the only one who didn't take one, and everyone asked why. So I told them... and they all made fun of me (I am the only diabetic in my school, it is small). So yeah, just fealing a little lonely. Thanks for your answers.

Wow! I can't believe how dumb people are for making fun of someone because they're diabetic. What a lame excuse to make fun of someone. Don't let people like that put you down, this won't be the last time you hear something dumb/ignorant coming out of someones mouth, just try and stay positive.

heya, my boyfriends diabetic, unfortunately you get some very ignorant people out there. But I think they are only like that because they are ignorant and dont understand so making fun of you makes them feel less stupid. Don't feel alone. Think of it as something different about you, it makes you special, because like your asking for help now, you will be able to help and understand others in the future. :-) keep smiling and don't worry about people like that, they arent worth it :-)

Sorry you are feeling lonely. I bet there are others that are diabetic but perhaps have not been diagnosed yet. I am a type II diabetic and take pills twice a day for it. You know you are really not alone and that as long as you follow the rules you can be healthy and have a good life. My granddaughter's boyfriend is type I and used the pump for his diabetes and of course follows the rules to stay safe. Have a good life and maybe we will meet in the next life.

Sorry to hear that you were recently diagnosed. It was very rude of them to make fun of you. Diabetes is a serious disease!
I have 2 daughters who are diabetic. One was diagnosed when she was 2 and she is now 9 and the other was 3 and diagnosed 1 year ago this week. She turns 5 next week.
There are 4 kids in the elementary school here with it. Next year my 9yr old will move on to the intermediate school and my youngest who has it will start Kindergarten, so there will still be 4 kids with it. When my 9yr old was in Kindergarten, she was the only one with it in the school.

I'm type 2 diabetic , been this way since the year 2002 , I'm 55 years old , my mother and my sister were diabetics ....when I found out officially I was diabetic my blood sugar reading were [ 400- 575 ] and I was peeing a lot and always thirsty.....now with all the pills [ 6 different kinds] and the 2 different insulins [ lantus - novolin -r ] my blood sugar readind are around [ 70 - 150 ] depends on what I eat...so you're not alone

My 2 year old daugter was diagnosed a few months ago. I have to take her blood sugars and give her the shots ... the finger pricks don't bother her too much but the shots still make her cry sometimes.

Yeah, she's already being left out. She was crying in the post office the other day and the woman behind the counter gave her a sucker ... and I had to take it away :o( Sometimes I tell people she's a diabetic and they start giving me weight loss tips for her. It's really frustrating. Just be patient ... people in high school can be mean, but adults are (usually) better. Just stick with the people who don't laugh at you and try to educate everyone. Then maybe the next diabetic that comes along will have an easier time of it.

Take care :o)

Your classmates made fun of you because you suffer from a serious disease requiring lifelong vigilance, strict adherence to a diet, and management including multiple injections and fingersticks daily just so you don't go into a coma?
What a bunch of jackasses.....

I'm so sorry they were mean to you. Kids can be so cruel. Stay strong and take care of your health. Don't let their ignorance get to you.

I am hard to classify... some of my doctors say I am a late onset Type 1, or Type 1.5.

I find it absolutely appauling that people made fun of you for having diabetes, if they only knew how serious the disease really was.

I'm not diabetic, but many people in my family are, making me high-risk, and so I also have to be very careful with what I eat, I also have to exercise regularly. My father is a type 2 diabetic, and has had it for about 7 years now. My grandmother was a type 2 diabetic, as well as my uncle who's a type 1 diabetic.

I'm really sorry about what happened to you today, that's ridiculous. I think you should educate your peers on the disease, maybe then they'd understand and show some compassion?

Also, I forgot to add, if you're currently on insulin, and not using the insulin pump, I'd defanitely talk to your doctor about looking into getting one. Insurance may or may not cover it, but I think it's totally worth it. My uncle got his a little over a year ago, and he is living his life much easier now. He simply sets the amount of insulin needed if he eats an extra treat now and then, but otherwise, it's already set to give you the insulin at the required times throughout the day. The insulin pump works wonders and has improved the quality of life for so many people out there.

i'm diabetic you are not alone trust me

yes I am type 1 have had it 13 years, it's ok to occasionally have sweet stuff if your in control

You not alone. Never.
There are a lot of us. This is the way everyone should eat, we are lucky enough that we HAVE to eat this way. We can live long healthy lives. Because of the risk of complications, it should make life more meaningful too, because you never know when your time is going to come. Take care of yourself, keep the A1C down and remember that you are awesome.

hi vichick. You are not alone. I'm type one too. It's been a while since I've been in high school, but I still remember those times. I remember on my last day, senior year we had a little party in the courtyard and everyone got an ice cream sandwich. They brought me a freakin' apple. The ironic thing about is the apple probably had more carbs than the ice cream sandwich. Oh well. Stay strong. You will be a better person for it in the long run. I wish you the best.

Hi,

I'm type two. The lack of understanding out there is rather sad, but don't let it get you down. My boss still brings in doughnuts every week... I don't think he understands what I'm saying when I tell him I'm diabetic and shouldn't have them. He's had a stroke, too... so he ought to know about healthy foods.

There are plenty of diabetics out here. Some of us are downright proud of it. It has forced us to learn a whole new way of life. Instead of letting it get to you, take it to them. Ask the teacher to do a couple of hours of diabetes education... or, even better, do it yourself. Take your blood sugar reading or show them how to do an injection. See how many of those wimps pass out. Be proud of the fact that you are brave and dealing with a disease that used to kill people not all that long ago. Tell them that 7 in 100 Canadians and Americans are diabetic and, chances are, someone they know is diabetic.

Be confident and proud, my young friend. We'll teach them.... sooner or later.

I was just diagnosed how can you stand it? I feel so lonely too. I'm sorry those people are so stupid.

what a lousy thing to have happened. i like what you did about it though, coming here and saying how you felt. most people aren't that ignorant. add me as a contact. we "freaks" gotta stick together!

just some advice: if you ever feel like not doing your injection then think about what you felt like b4 you were diagnosed. and just take this p*** out of them or there mums or something it will make you feel better

I am sorry that your feel lonely and have mean people like that at your school. I was lucky to have a friend in high school that was also a diabetic. I am a type one and was diagnosed at age 11. You should talk to you doctor about support groups or something for young people with diabetes. It was extremely helpful to have a friend that suffered the same illness that I did. I also recommend a book written by John Keller is 2004 called living with diabetes. It was one of the best books I ever read. The author was diagnosed with type one diabetes when he was4 and it talks about how felt and how people viewed him. It was very comforting to me that someone else felt the same way I did.
